Who Is an Ideal Face Lift Candidate?

Nobody wants to grow old. We watch as our parents or grandparents age and we say that we don’t want to face that same fate. Time has a way of marching on, however, and it does not ask for our permission. Quite often, it marches on right over our faces. Lines and wrinkles on the face can make you appear older than you are and make you feel older as well. Many people are now turning to facelifts in order to help them to feel and look younger.

A facelift takes the skin on the face and pulls it back, smoothing out the wrinkles and furrows that have appeared and tend to make one look older. Many people believe that just about anyone can have this type of facial cosmetic surgery performed, but there are actually some people who are better candidates than others.

The average person deciding on a facelift procedure is anywhere from 40 to 60 years old. It isn’t age, however, which helps determine who is a good candidate for this cosmetic surgery. One good indicator for whether a person will benefit from this cosmetic surgery option or not is how much elasticity their skin has in it. Elasticity allows the skin to snap back into shape once it’s been pulled. Those who do not have much elasticity will not get a very good result from a facelift which is why they are often discouraged from having one.

How can you tell if you have elasticity in your skin? Pinch your skin and pull it away from your body and hold it there for a few seconds, then let it go. After you’ve done that, see what your skin does. If your skin goes back into place, you still have plenty of elasticity. If it does not, your elasticity has decreased and this is when a cosmetic surgeon is the best person to tell you if you are still a good candidate for this cosmetic surgery. There are many different types of cosmetic procedures that can be done on your face to make you look younger, and even if you’re not a good candidate for a facelift, you may be an excellent candidate for another facial rejuvenation procedure, including eyelid surgery, a brow lift, fat transfer, lip augmentation, corrective nose surgery, and BOTOX® injections.
