There are many myths about laser hair removal and how it works, and who it works for. These myths often prevent people from seeking out a cosmetic surgeon’s advice to see if they are a good candidate for this treatment. Many of these misconceptions, however, are absolutely false and need to be debunked.

One of the most common misconceptions is that laser hair removal is only good for people who have very dark hair. This is not true. Thanks to the advancement of lasers, most lasers can pinpoint directly to hair follicles. While most cosmetic surgeons do not like taking on patients who have very blonde or white hair, as long as you have some pigmentation in your hair, the laser should be able to work just fine. Another misconception is that you can have your hair removed entirely after one visit. Unfortunately, this is false, as the lasers may take a few visits before they completely kill the hair follicles. That fact has to do with the growth of the hair follicle, not with the power of the lasers.

Pain is another problem that many people believe is true of laser hair removal. They believe that this course of treatment is a very painful procedure. While it used to be in the past, it no longer is. The newest of lasers on the market have a cooling tip, which means that it blows cool air onto the skin as it works in order to help keep the skin free of irritation during the procedure. There may be a bit of irritation after the procedure is finished, but not enough to keep patients from going about their daily routine.

Cost is also another misconception that many people have. They tend to believe that laser hair removal costs a great deal of money. In reality, however, if you’re looking to get rid of excess hair, this treatment is fairly cheap. If you’re someone who pays for waxing, or who has to pay for electric razors or a great deal of shaving cream, you may actually be saving money when all is said and done. All in all, make sure you speak with a cosmetic surgeon about laser hair removal and the truth before you believe the myths.
