Patients who would like to change the shape of their nose, or address breathing problems caused by nasal structure, may be good candidates for nose surgery at our Winnetka and Chicago plastic surgery centers. Rhinoplasty, the medical term for nose surgery, can alter the shape of your nose to bring it into better proportion and balance with your other facial features.
Dr. John Q. Cook can utilize a number of different rhinoplasty techniques to address specific issues you may have regarding the shape and structure of your nose. Continue reviewing the information in our website to learn more about nose surgery techniques or contact our offices in Chicago or Winnetka to schedule a rhinoplasty consultation.
Recontouring the nose is an effective way of addressing problems that you may have with the appearance of your nose, or problems you may encounter with breathing. Some of the benefits of rhinoplasty include:
The minimum age to be a candidate for rhinoplasty is typically 14 for girls and 15 for boys. Candidates should be in relatively good physical and emotional health with realistic expectations for results. During your initial consultation at either our Winnetka or Chicago centers, Dr. John Q. Cook will explain all aspects of nose surgery to you.
The rhinoplasty procedure generally involves incisions made along the strip of skin that separates the nostrils or inside the nostrils themselves. Either way, any residual scarring is virtually invisible. Dr. John Q. Cook will separate the nasal cartilage and bone from the skin of the nose, and recontour them according to your ultimate goals. He will then redrape the skin and close the incisions. Sometimes, nasal packs may be placed to stabilize the septum, but these will come out after a few days.
At our Chicago area centers, rhinoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia. Depending on each patient, the entire procedure usually takes an hour to two hours to complete.
At least a day of bed rest, while keeping your head elevated, is necessary after nose surgery. You should expect some puffiness in the face and some discomfort in the nasal area that may lead to a small headache. Any residual pain can be managed with medication. Bruising and swelling will fade over the first couple of weeks following surgery. Although your nose may bleed some in the first few days after rhinoplasty, Dr. Cook cautions you not to blow your nose for at least a week to ensure that the tissues are healing properly. Nasal splints, dressings and stitches are usually removed after about a week to two weeks. Dr. Cook asks that you not take on strenuous activities for at least two to three weeks after nose surgery, and take special care to keep your nose safe from external pressure or sun damage for at least two months. Normal routines can generally be resumed after about a week.
