Non-surgical fat reduction at the Whole Beauty® Institute.
Why Dr. John Q. Cook Is the Right Body Surgeon for You
Dr. Cook has extensive experience with all body contouring procedures and has performed well over 1000 body contour surgeries. Many of these procedures can be performed under local anesthesia in our Chicago and Winnetka offices.
Dr. Cook was one of the first plastic surgeons in the Midwest to work with advanced radiofrequency devices (BodyTite®, FaceTite,®AccuTite®, and Morpheus®) that allow for skin and deeper tissue tightening, along with liposuction. This allows him to treat patients who have mild to moderate loose skin, since he can tighten and reduce fat without the need to remove skin.
At the Whole Beauty® Institute we offer patients looking for body contouring the complete spectrum of non-invasive, minimally invasive, and more extensive surgery procedures, and have the experience to know which will be the best choice for each patient. We also offer a wide range of aesthetic treatments that can further advance the results of most surgical procedures.
For larger body contouring procedures such as Abdominoplasty and Mommy Makeover we provide recovery in a 5-star luxury hotel with an experienced nurse to get your recovery off to a good and safe start.

Enjoy the Next Generation of Nonsurgical Fat Reduction in Chicago and Winnetka
SculpSure® at the Chicago area’s Whole Beauty® Institute is a non-invasive device that uses laser energy to reduce deposits of fat in relatively fit people. It is part of the portfolio of surgical and nonsurgical treatments that we use to help our patients obtain a pleasing body shape.
Every team member at our practice recognizes that our treatments contribute to our patients’ health and well-being. We counsel our patients on the benefits of good patterns of nutrition and exercise, since these are the closest we can come to the “fountain of youth.” Sometimes, however, diet and exercise are not enough. Fat reduction begins with a solid platform of nutrition and exercise. For some people, try as they may, it is nearly impossible to lose fat from resistant zones. There are many such areas in the body: the abdomen, the waist, the hips, the inner and outer thighs, and the arms. If you have such difficult areas on your body, SculpSure® offers an FDA-approved way to significantly reduce unwanted fat deposits that is completely nonsurgical.
Who Can Benefit from SculpSure®?
A reasonably trim person with good skin tone and distinct areas of excess fat in the abdomen, waist, or outer thighs is the very best candidate for SculpSure® therapy. Other people can also benefit, and we can educate you as to whether the treatment will offer sufficient results to be worth your while.
We do not recommend SculpSure® for people who are significantly overweight. The treatment is not a weight-loss strategy.
Losing weight and keeping it off ahead of a SculpSure® session can be an excellent strategy for maintaining long-term results. Seeing the slimming results of the treatment can create a positive feedback loop and more motivation to continue eating well and exercising.
How Does SculpSure® Work?
The SculpSure® technology was developed by Cynosure®, a laser company that has been responsible for many of the innovations in medical laser devices in recent decades. Among their contributions are IPL, SlimLipo®, SmartLipo®, and Cellulaze®.
After several years of intense research and testing, Cynosure® introduced the laser technology for use in patients.
Other devices for fat reduction involve the application of cold, ultrasound, or radiofrequency energy to reduce volume. SculpSure® works by an entirely different method. Laser energy is delivered to where excess fat sits, generating heat in that specific area. This heat is enough to disrupt the structure of the fat cells in the zone, which causes them to self destruct. The body’s natural method of renewal carries away the injured cells, causing a reduction of volume over time.
Where Can SculpSure Be Applied?
The greatest experience with SculpSure® is in the mid-body: the abdomen, flanks (for love handles), and hips. The technology is flexible, however, so that treatment can be carried out in many other zones of the body, including the back and the inner and outer thighs.
What is a SculpSure® Session Like?
SculpSure® is easy to customize to the contours of each individual’s body. Patients who choose SculpSure® therapy experience a sense of warmth in the treated area. Some patients who have been treated by other fat reduction technologies say that the SculpSure® treatment is pleasant.
For most people, the treatment takes about 25 to 30 minutes. We recommend a minimum of two treatment sessions. For some patients, we recommend a combination of SculpSure® and other fatreduction treatments.
What Happens After a SculpSure® Session?
There is minimal discomfort after the treatment, and patients can return to their normal activity right away. Results from the treatment will reveal themselves in four to six weeks. Expect continued improvement in the following weeks as the body continues to clear out the damaged fat cells. In clinical trials, SculpSure® was found to obtain a 25 percent reduction of fat in the treated area with a single treatment.
With other treatment methods, some patients experience symptoms related to nerve irritation that may persist for weeks or even longer. This is not the case with SculpSure®.
More Fat Reduction Options
Our patients benefit from our deep experience with all forms of body contour improvement, both surgical and nonsurgical. It is a core belief of the practice that a patient’s best interest is served when we offer customized solutions, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. During our detailed consultation, we will explore your level of health and fitness, your goals, your skin tone, and your pattern of fat distribution.
If we feel that SculpSure® will offer you a significant benefit, we will recommend it. If we feel that other forms of treatment will better meet your goals, we will discuss these in detail. If we feel that you will most benefit from an improved pattern of nutrition and exercise, that will be our recommendation.
We are proud of our extensive experience in a wide range of body contour methods. These include the high lateral tension abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), which we feel is the gold standard for power in body contour correction.
We also have decades of experience with all forms of liposuction. We offer the complete range of techniques, from classical to Vaser® to the latest laser and radiofrequency technologies. Minimally invasive techniques are usually carried out under local anesthesia in the comfort and privacy of our offices.
We also have significant experience with Cellulaze®, a minimally invasive procedure that offers lasting cellulite reduction with a single treatment. Our medical aesthetics team can further improve body tone with body-zone-specific medical-grade products and advanced radiofrequency treatments that can provide nonsurgical skin tightening.
Our team may suggest other non-invasive treatments to make your results from SculpSure® even better. We may offer you the benefit of Forma®, a series of radiofrequency treatments that will tighten the skin in the area where fat was reduced. Another radiofrequency treatment, Body FX®, offers further fat reduction and tightening. Evolve® takes these technologies to the next level for hands-free contouring of much larger body areas.
SculpSure® Frequently Asked Questions
Can fat cells targeted by SculpSure® regrow?
Fat cells resemble balloons. When a person gains weight, these cells expand to store the extra energy that has been taken in by the body. Some spa treatments for fat reduction cause the fat cells to “leak” some of their stored fat, but the cell remains intact and can grow again if the person overeats. SculpSure® causes so much damage to the fat cells that they cannot survive. The result is a lasting reduction of the number of fat cells in the treated area. Zones that were previously “fat magnets” are less likely to enlarge once they have been treated by the laser technology.
How much reduction usually occurs?
In the studies that led to FDA approval of SculpSure®, there was a 25 percent average reduction of fat in the treated areas. As with all non-invasive fat reduction technologies, this reduction is most noticeable in people who are already trim and have relatively small areas of fat to be reduced. In general, the thicker the area of fat, the less noticeable the reduction. It is also important to maintain optimal habits of nutrition and exercise.
Is this a substitute for diet and exercise?
As with surgical fat-reduction procedures, SculpSure® is not a substitute for good personal habits. In order to get the best long-term results, patients should optimize nutrition and exercise and use the treatment to correct resistant areas.
Can other treatments be performed at the same time?
Many patients choose to undergo facial procedures such as oxygen facials, radiofrequency treatments, and chemical peels at the same time they are treated with the SculpSure® technology. This makes it a great choice for busy people, as it is possible to get the benefits of two different treatments at the same time.
Will SculpSure® deliver the same results as liposuction?
Liposuction is much more powerful than SculpSure® in terms of treating areas of excess fat. Because of our in-depth experience with all forms of body contour surgery, we can guide you to the technique that makes the most sense for your goals and priorities.
