Why Dr. John Q. Cook Is the Right Body Surgeon for You
Dr. Cook has extensive experience with all body contouring procedures and has performed well over 1000 body contour surgeries. Many of these procedures can be performed under local anesthesia in our Chicago and Winnetka offices.
Dr. Cook was one of the first plastic surgeons in the Midwest to work with advanced radiofrequency devices (AccuTite®, BodyTite®, FaceTite®, and Morpheus®) that allow for skin and deeper tissue tightening, along with body contouring. This allows him to treat patients who have mild to moderate loose skin without the need to remove skin.
At the Whole Beauty® Institute, we offer patients the complete spectrum of non-invasive, minimally invasive, and surgical body contouring. We have extensive experience to know which will be the best choice for each patient. We also offer a wide range of aesthetic treatments that can further advance the results of most surgical procedures.
For larger body contouring procedures, such as Abdominoplasty and Mommy Makeover, we provide recovery in a 5-star luxury hotel with an experienced nurse to get your recovery off to a good and safe start.

Cellulaze® for Cellulite Removal
Reduce Dimpling and ‘Cottage Cheese Skin’ on the Thighs and Buttocks in Chicago and Winnetka
The Whole Beauty® Institute team is pleased to offer our patients Cellulaze® for cellulite reduction at our Chicago and Winnetka offices. Cellulaze® is an FDA-approved cellulite removal therapy that leads to long-term reduction in cellulite after a single treatment. We treat zones of irregularity on the outer thighs, backs and fronts of the thighs, and buttocks. Most patients can return to work and normal activity in one to three days after their cellulite removal treatment.
Cellulite is a condition that makes the skin’s surface appear lumpy and irregular. It is surprisingly common, occurring in 70 to 80 percent of women—and it has nothing to do with being overweight. In fact, it can even occur in trim, highly athletic women. Many women who have cellulite are self-conscious about it, to the point where they are uncomfortable wearing swimsuits, shorts, or skirts that end above the knee. For this reason, a wide range of cellulite removal products and treatments exist for treating the dimply skin, including various lotions, rolling pins with vacuum pressure, and a bewildering variety of other gadgets. Some of these help a little if the treatments are made on a weekly basis, but all of them fail to offer the sort of lasting reduction possible with Cellulaze®.
With FDA approval of the Cellulaze® cellulite removal technology in 2012, the hope for a treatment that offers a lasting reduction in cellulite became a reality. It is important to put this cellulite removal treatment in proper perspective. It is not a magic wand that will make cellulite completely disappear. It is, however, a treatment that can offer many patients a lasting 30 to 60 percent reduction in the appearance of cellulite with a single treatment. For many patients, this is the difference between feeling comfortable and not feeling comfortable in a bathing suit.
The Cellulaze® cellulite removal therapy is carried out in the Whole Beauty® Institute’s Chicago and Winnetka offices, with the patients under a local anesthetic. A typical cellulite removal treatment takes about one and a half to two hours. Recovery is easy, and most patients can return to normal work, mild exercise, and social activity within two to three days after their cellulite removal session.
What is the Cellulaze® Experience at Whole Beauty® Institute?
During the initial consultation, we will map out a detailed treatment plan for you. First, we will determine whether you will benefit from the cellulite removal treatment enough to make it a worthwhile investment. Patients who are the best candidates for this procedure have tight skin and irregularity that is not severe. Assuming it is a potential solution for you, we will map the areas that will be treated and determine the number of cellulite removal treatment sessions that will be necessary. At that point, you will be scheduled for treatment.
On the day of your cellulite removal treatment, you should eat a normal breakfast. When you arrive at the office, you will be given an antibiotic and medication that makes you calm and a little drowsy. Your cellulite zones will be precisely mapped and marked on the skin in the preliminary room. Next, you will move to the treatment room where the areas marked for cellulite removal treatment will be numbed. After an appropriate time has passed, the treatment begins with a very specific application of laser energy to melt raised areas of fat, release bands that cause dimples, and treat the undersurface of the skin. At the end of cellulite removal treatment, the area is rolled in a manner similar to a massage.
You will then be fitted with a girdle, which you will wear for the first two to three weeks after your cellulite removal treatment. We often put extra pads under the girdle to apply compression to the treated area for the first few days. Because of the medication we have given you, you will need to have a friend or family member drive you home from your treatment. If it is difficult for you to find someone to do this, we can also arrange for transportation.
What is Recovery Like After a Cellulaze® Cellulite Removal Session?
Because the cellulite removal treatment is performed with the patient under local anesthesia, recovery is quite easy. You can return right away to light activity, and it is good to walk as long as activities are not carried to extremes. Most patients return to their normal light activities one to three days after their session. You will have to avoid certain typse of heavy exercise for a relatively short period after treatment. We will advise you specifically as to how to integrate Cellulaze® cellulite removal therapy into your specific exercise program when you see us in consultation.
Cellulite Removal FAQs
PMany patients seeking body surgery ask whether their procedure of choice will serve as a cellulite treatment as well. Procedures that remove tissue can potentially help if the excised skin is dimpled, but in general, Cellulaze® is required for smoothing out problem areas. Here are answers to more frequently asked questions from patients.
What makes Cellulaze® different from other cellulite removal treatments?
Over the decades, there have been many attempted treatments for cellulite removal, ranging from lotions to a variety of machines in a spa setting. All of these have the disadvantage of not working well and being impermanent. As soon as you stop doing the treatment, the cellulite returns. Cellulaze® has been shown in clinical trials to provide lasting cellulite reduction with a single treatment. It is the first therapy that has FDA approval for the lasting reduction of cellulite.
What are the causes of cellulite?
Cellulite is much more common in women than in men, and there is a tendency for cellulite to run in families. The irregularity of cellulite has three main causes. First, the fat under the skin is lumpy rather than smooth. Second, bands of connective tissue run from the undersurface of the skin down into the fat and cause dimples. Third, the skin itself in areas of cellulite tends to be thin, so it reveals underlying imperfections.
How does Cellulaze® address the causes of cellulite?
Cellulaze® is a laser-driven cellulite removal device that has a patented side-angle beam. The device is passed under the skin in a manner similar to liposuction. The beam of laser energy is turned down to reduce lumps of excess fat, sideways to cut the tethering bands that cause dimpling, and upward to treat the undersurface of the skin and cause a thickening of the skin over time.
Where does cellulite occur?
The most common zones are the outer thighs, the back of the thighs, the buttocks, and the front of the thighs.
Do diet and exercise help reduce cellulite?
A healthy diet and plentiful exercise are always good ideas, and people in optimal shape recover and heal quickly. Unfortunately, there is often little relation between a person’s weight and the likelihood of her developing cellulite. Many of our cellulite removal patients are extremely athletic, yet have zones of dimpled skin.
What common conditions are mistaken for cellulite?
People who have lost significant weight or who have had overly aggressive fat-reduction surgery can develop irregularities that are related to looseness of the skin. These are not true cellulite, and they will not respond well to cellulite removal efforts. They can, however, respond well to various forms of body lifting procedures, such as the posterior body lift, the medial thigh lift, and the high lateral tension abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), which, in addition to tightening the belly area, provides a lift to the front of the thighs. Some people have deep dimples in their fat from trauma, or where they have given themselves injections for medical conditions such as diabetes. Cellulaze® will not help these conditions, although other treatments, such as fat transfer, may be helpful. General areas of fullness in the outer thighs, the inner thighs, and the knees will respond to various types of liposuction such as laser lipoplasty and other treatments, such as BodyTite® and AccuTite®.
Which patients get the best results from Cellulaze®?
Skin tone is an important predictor of the success of a cellulite removal procedure. In general, the better the skin tone, the better the results. The outer thighs and the backs of the thighs are the areas that have the highest percentage of “homerun” results.
Who is likely to be disappointed by cellulite removal?
Patients on either extreme—with either very subtle forms of cellulite or severe cellulite, especially with loose skin—are likely to be disappointed. Fortunately, a significant number of patients fall into the middle ground between these extremes, and these patients have a good probability of satisfaction with the cellulite removal procedure, as long as their expectations are realistic.
When do I see results from Cellulaze® therapy?
It is important to realize that it takes time for the cellulite removal results to develop. There are three phases to the recovery after Cellulaze® therapy. In the first few weeks, swelling will make everything look smooth—if somewhat swollen. As the initial swelling subsides, there is a “settling-in” phase that lasts for two to three months. The real action occurs between three and six months after treatment. This is when you will see the difference that the cellulite removal treatment has made. This is different from other cellulite treatments that last for a few days then disappear.
How long do the cellulite removal results last?
The FDA studies show continued improvement at one year after a Cellulaze® treatment. The longest results to date are several years and seem to be holding up well.
How important is the skill of the surgeon who carries out the cellulite removal procedure?
As with the various forms of surgical fat reduction, the skill and artistic judgment of the surgeon are the most important factors that determine the quality of the result. Whole Beauty® Institute patients benefit from the level of skill and experience Dr. Cook provides, as well as his careful attention to detail. These are the same factors that account for the overall success of the practice.

Cellulaze® is an FDA approved therapy that provides permanent cellulite reduction with a single treatment. Many of the women who come to me as patients are very athletic. They exercise 5 to 6 days a week, do Yoga, eat a Mediterranean diet, and yet when it comes to cellulite, it is all to no avail. Cellulite is an irregularity of the skin and the fat just beneath it, most commonly in the back of the thigh, the buttock, and the outer thigh, but sometimes in other areas.
Cellulaze® Technology is recently approved by the FDA for long-term reduction of the appearance of cellulite with a single treatment. This marks a significant advance in the treatment of this common disorder typically found in the thighs and buttocks.
